Counselling and Psychotherapy

What to expect

You may feel excitement and hope, as well as fear and dread when you enter the therapy room. This is completely normal

Your first session helps me gather information about who you are. I’ll ask questions about your family, relationships, hobbies, key life events, education and work, medical history and spiritual beliefs (if you have them).

All other sessions involve dialogue and the use of relational and gentle body-focused techniques to explore your inner world.

You’ll be empowered to set the direction of your therapy.

At times we’ll revisit the same issues and you may feel like you’re ‘going backwards’ but this is not the case. Each time we return, we are coming to it from a new place of awareness and inner resources.

Your journey towards change and transformation is non-linear, cyclical and involves a sense of mystery and risk.

Counselling and Psychotherapy - What's the difference?

These words are often used interchangeably, and in essence, they are very similar. However, there are some key differences. If you imagine a spectrum with counselling at one end and psychotherapy at the other, my approach leans towards the psychotherapeutic end, which is part of the counselling services offered in Clifton Beach Cairns.

Some clients start off with a more counselling-based approach focused on specific life challenges. Through this process, they discover that deeper exploration is required through a psychotherapeutic approach.

Counselling

- short-term, structured sessions

- focused on specific issues and life-transition challenges (e.g., moving into parenthood or grief at the loss of a loved one)

- involves goal-setting with a focus on symptom reduction

- advice isn’t given; clients are facilitated to tap into their own resources to develop solutions to issues and problems

Psychotherapy

- long term, an unfolding process that could last years

- a genuine and authentic client/therapist relationship is at the heart of the work

- best suited to addressing early developmental trauma

- not just about reducing symptoms; it's deeper and more exploratory work that leads to lasting transformation

- can lead to whole personality change, but instead of becoming someone else, we return to who we really are at our core.
